The Cure
TWO PEOPLE HARBORING SECRETS...
A stranger from the future comes to Paige’s cabin in rural Georgia with a treatment for her early onset Alzheimer’s disease. He bargains with the skeptical patient to give her The Cure if she’ll conduct a longitudinal study for him, proving his drug’s efficacy to a future world full of clients that need it. Faced with her dire diagnosis, he might be her only hope. She grapples with the side effects of his offer and learns to suppress her own dangerous truth: trust no one.
Seldom lucky in love, Paige finds herself competing with her best friend for his attention, knowing there can be no good end for their stolen moments of passion. Can she stay under the radar of the medical and legal communities to carry out his requests? And how will their complicated pasts bring them together physically, emotionally and professionally in a successful, if unethical, partnership?
Many lives will be changed, but at what cost… and to whom?
REVIEW/THOUGHTS:
I really enjoyed the premise of this book. Bowen wrote with such clarity and creativity that really amazed me. It was a quick read but delivered with a great punch of a story line that was definitely exciting, fast moving, and can be read in one sitting.
Paige, a Physician’s Assistant gets a visit one evening from a stranger who promises a cure for her early stage Alzheimer’s disease. The stranger, Peter Lee is a researcher from the future whose promise of a treatment is too good to pass up. Selma, Paige’s friend who is a physician gets involved with the recruitment of patients and in this entangled web. The Cure is so important but to what cost?
There was a time slip element that I also enjoyed reading about, but the story was much more than that. I found that in reading this book, it posed a lot of questions related to medical research ethics, health care advancements, patient privacy and the morality of our decision making all in the name of scientific advancements. The characters created by Bowen were realistic and flawed, made it fun to read especially that of Paige, Selma and Peter.
I recommend this book for those who enjoy a unique medical thriller that grabs you from the start.
