With the cloud of the Holocaust still looming over them, twin sisters Bronka and Johanna Lubinski and their parents arrive in the US from a Displaced PersonsCamp, hoping to build a new life.

Soon after their arrival, however, a neighbor is arrested by the FBI for suspected involvement in the Rosenberg spy case―and they find themselves in the midst of one of the most notorious court cases of theRed Scare. In the years after WWII, they experience the difficulties of adjusting to American culture, as well as the burgeoning fear of the Cold War.

Years later, the discovery of a former
Nazi hiding in their community brings the Holocaustout of the shadows. As the
girls get older, they start to wonder about their parents’ pasts, and they begin
to demand answers. But it soon becomes clear that those memories will be more
difficult and painful to uncover than they could have anticipated.

Poignant and haunting, The Takeaway Men
explores the impact of immigration, identity, prejudice, secrets, and lies on
parents and children in mid-twentieth-century America.

THOUGHTS/REVIEW:

2 sisters
2 decades
2 continents

The story began in Kielce, Poland August of 1942 where Edita smuggles Jewish children out of the Ghetto and hides Jewish adults in their attic unbeknownst to her father, a Polish policemen who supported the Nazis against the Jews.

The story revolves around twin sisters Johanna and Bronka who immigrated to the states from Poland in 1951 to Bellerose, New York.

This Historical Fiction writing by Ain was easy to read, well researched and followed the story of this family with rich and intricate detail of the neighborhood, the people, the food, the shops and day to day goings-on. I was truly transported to that time and the neighborhood filled with refugees from all over including the Chinese, Italian, and Irish as well as Jewish refugees from Europe.

Ain’s debut novel highlights the saga of the survivors post war illuminating their adjustment to the American culture with sensitivity and compassion. This was a powerful novel that follows a family and what they went through post the horrors of Holocaust as survivors, and navigating the Jewish American landscape in mid -twentieth-century America.

This was an exceptional read not to be missed.

5/17/20 ”Little Tea” by Claire Fullerton

Print Length: 252 pages
Publisher: Firefly Southern Fiction (May 1, 2020)
Publication Date: May 1, 2020
Sold by: Amazon.com Services LLC

Southern Culture … Old Friendships … Family Tragedy

One phone call from Renny to come home and “see about” the capricious Ava and Celia Wakefield decides to overlook her distressful past in the name of friendship.

For three reflective days at Renny’s lake house in Heber Springs, Arkansas, the three childhood friends reunite and examine life, love, marriage, and the ties that bind, even though Celia’s personal story has yet to be healed. When the past arrives at the lake house door in the form of her old boyfriend, Celia must revisit the life she’d tried to outrun.

As her idyllic coming of age alongside her best friend, Little Tea, on her family’s ancestral grounds in bucolic Como, Mississippi unfolds, Celia realizes there is no better place to accept her own story than in this circle of friends who have remained beside her throughout the years. Theirs is a friendship that can talk any life sorrow into a comic tragedy, and now that the racial divide in the Deep South has evolved, Celia wonders if friendship can triumph over history.

THOUGHTS/REVIEW:

Southern Fiction genre is new to me and I have quickly fallen in love with this style and subject matter of storytelling. It is a genre I love for its quirky and fun to read about characters that are full of sass, full of independent women with strong and unique personalities, life-long friendships, and a deeply rooted family legacy stories in a setting I enjoy reading about. The dialogue is superb with the addition of the southern colloquialism, the story will immerse you into the story.

Claire Fullerton wrote a beautiful story set in two timelines. The current one telling the story of three friends - Remmy a veterinarian, Ava their flighty friend in marital distress and Celia from Malibu, California with a complex past story that she would rather leave behind - told through Celia's perspective. The other timeline picks up the story from the 1980's that tells of Celia's history set in Mississippi and alongside her best friend, Little Tea. I enjoyed the Historical Fiction aspect of the story and really enjoyed going back to the past to really learn about the characters' back stories.

The portrayal of a very narrow minded southern culture that was cultivated within the lives of the people were eye opening to me. I loved how Fullerton addressed issues of friendship, love, marriage and second chances. The story was well written, had beautifully developed strong and unique characters that I loved reading about. This was a truly enjoyable Southern Fiction, Women's Fiction and Domestic Drama novel that I recommend.

Ruth Cooperman arrives in beautiful beachside Provincetown for her retirement, renting the perfect waterfront cottage while she searches for her forever home. After years of hard work and making peace with life's compromises, Ruth is looking forward to a carefree summer of solitude. But when she finds a baby girl abandoned on her doorstep, Ruth turns to her new neighbors for help and is drawn into the drama of the close-knit community.

The appearance of the mystery baby has an emotional ripple effect through the women in town, including Amelia Cabral, the matriarch who lost her own child decades earlier; Elise Douglas, owner of the tea shop who gave up her dream of becoming a mother; and teenage local Jaci Barros who feels trapped by her parents' expectations. Ruth, caring for a baby for the first time in thirty years, even reaches out to her own estranged daughter, Olivia, summoning her to Provincetown in hopes of a reconciliation.

HUMANKIND: CHANGING THE WORLD ONE SMALL ACT AT A TIME By BRAD ARONSON

Print Length: 256 pages
Publisher: LifeTree Media (April 14, 2020)
Publication Date: April 14, 2020
Sold by: Amazon.com Services LLC

HumanKind is the heartwarming feel-good book that we all need right now.

Brad Aronson's life changed in an instant when his wife, Mia, was diagnosed with leukemia. After her diagnosis, Brad spent most of the next two and a half years either by her side as she received treatment or trying to shield their five-year-old son, Jack, from the worst of Mia's illness. Amid the stress and despair of waiting for the treatment to work, Brad and Mia were met by an outpouring of kindness from friends, family and even complete strangers.

Inspired by the many demonstrations of "humankindness" that supported their family through Mia's recovery, Brad began writing about the people who rescued his family from that dark time, often with the smallest of gestures. But he didn't stop there. Knowing that simple acts of kindness transform lives across the globe every day, he sought out these stories and shares some of the best ones here.

In HumanKind, you'll meet the mentor who changed a child's life with a single lesson in shoe tying, the six-year-old who launched a global kindness movement, the band of seamstress grandmothers who mend clothes for homeless people, and many other heroes.

Brad also provides dozens of ways you can make a difference through the simplest words and deeds. You'll discover how buying someone a meal or sharing a little encouragement at the right time can change someone's world, as well as your own.

The resource section at the back of the book provides guidance and organizations that will help you channel and amplify your own acts of kindness. Here you'll discover:

How you can fund a surgery to cure someone's blindness with a donation of less than $200.
Organizations through which you can provide a birthday gift for a child who otherwise wouldn't receive one.
Multiple places where you can send letters of encouragement to support hospitalized kids, lonely seniors, refugees, veterans and others in need.
And over fifty more ways you can change a life.

HumanKind will leave you grateful for what you have and provide a refuge from the negativity that surrounds us. This feel-good book will touch your heart. You'll laugh, you'll cry and you'll be reminded of what really matters.
All author royalties go to Big Brothers Big Sisters.

THOUGHTS/REVIEW:

What a perfect book to read right now during these stressful and uncertain times, where the smallest act of kindness goes a long way. Brad Aronson wrote this amazing book that truly inspired me in the most wonderful way through these heartwarming stories of people's acts of kindness and how it affects people in the most positive and meaningful ways.

This all started when Brad Aronson's life took a sudden turn when his wife Mia was diagnosed with leukemia. For the next few years as Mia receives treatment, and Brad trying to cope with their five year old son Jack, their family received an outpouring of support, and generosity from friends, family and strangers. These simple acts of kindness brought Brad and his family through their dark times. This generous spirit brought him inspiration to write about these small acts of human kindness which he shares in this book.

Within these chapters are a call to action on how we can make an impact in someone's life no matter how small we may think that may be. Ideas on how can we make a difference in someone's life is sprinkled throughout the book and what I enjoyed the most were the sections at the end of the chapters on how to spend fifteen minutes to think differently, to thank someone or to celebrate with another person.

I loved that the book empowers the readers on how to be awesome through thoughtfulness, generosity and kindness. Brad Aronson offers up easy to accomplish actionable ideas to start making a difference right now.

I highly recommend this book for an inspirational read on how we can make this world a better place.

Luckily, his wife, Mia, is understanding.

Brad loves teaching entrepreneurship to youth in Camden, N.J., and volunteering on the nonprofit boards of Big Brothers Big Sisters and Hopeworks.

One day Brad hopes to be famous for co-founding a national holiday that features a seven-foot-tall orange tree and more than fifty stuffed monkeys (see chapter nine of his book HumanKind). In the meantime, he works with tech startups and writes books.

THE RUBY OF THE SEA BY PEGGY LAMPMAN @SUZYAPPROVEDBOOKTOURS

  • Print Length: 394 pages
  • Simultaneous Device Usage: Unlimited
  • Publication Date: February 5, 2020
  • Sold by: Amazon.com Services LLC

From the award-winning author of The Promise Kitchen comes a riveting new story of twin sisters caught in their mother's crosshairs on what to do about their disturbed younger sister.

Lush with devastating secrets, lies, romance and psychological drama..."You tell me about a family without a certain amount of dysfunction, and I'll tell you that family is lying."

After aimlessly traveling the country for fifteen years, Linnea Chandler returns to her hometown of Key West, Florida keeping the genesis of a life-altering phobia to herself--not a good idea, as she comes to find out. The 19th Century lighthouse that she, her parents and two sisters call home also has a troubled past, carrying the frightening myth that eerily mirrors the mystery of her younger sister today. Should Linnea run while she can?

The women must decide to what extremes they are willing to go to protect their secrets. Ignore the brutality behind the retrieval of spoils from a fatal shipwreck in 1857? Defy a 2017 hurricane threatening to pummel their town? And when their world is upended, do the women have the strength to move forward?

THOUGHTS/REVIEW:

This is a rich, poignant and heartbreaking story that is centered on twin sisters, Delphina and Linnea. The story is told in their alternating viewpoints along with their younger sister Ivy.

The family is coming into grips trying to help their mother and their younger sister Ivy who has bipolar disorder. The story is set in Key West, Florida where they live in a 19th century lighthouse with a history of its own.

Immersed in the issues of mental health and family drama, this family tries to face their demons and strengthen each other by uncovering secrets, learning to face the truth, and hope to come out stronger than ever to keep their family intact.

Lampman’s brilliance is in creating these flawed characters you would love to read about. It’s a great story to get lost in, in one afternoon. I enjoyed getting transported to Key West and the mysterious light house with an eery past connected to a fatal shipwreck in 1857.

I recommend this read for those that enjoy a character driven story line and a contemporary family drama. Get ready with your tissues in hand as this story is bittersweet. I really enjoyed this read.

3/17/20 HOUSE OF LIES by Terry Lynn Thomas House of Lies: A gripping historical mystery from the USA Today bestselling author of The Silent Woman! (Cat Carlisle, Book 3)

  • Print Length: 240 pages
  • Publisher: HQ Digital (March 4, 2020)
  • Publication Date: March 4, 2020
  • Sold by: HarperCollins Publishers

In a time of war, nowhere is safe…

While World War Two rages, Cat Carlisle runs a women’s refuge to protect beaten wives. But when one of the women is found dead in the woods behind the house, Cat’s world shatters.

Was the killer a violent husband seeking revenge? A secret lover? Or is something more dangerous at play? Because Cat and her fiancé Thomas have a secret: they’re hiding a precious golden chalice, keeping it locked safely away from the plundering Nazis until the war is over. But someone wants that treasure, and no one will be safe until they get it…

THOUGHTS/REVIEW:

In “House of Lies" @terrylynnthomasbooks has written a captivating and intriguing historical fiction suspenseful mystery set during WWII. A third in the series, that read great as a stand-alone and I really enjoyed this one! Fantastic!

Our main character, Catherine ‘Cat’ Carlisle, a wealthy widow who uses her inheritance running a safe house for abused women, and who is also engaged to Thomas Charles, a local detective. Cat is in a very dangerous situation harboring these women from their abusive relationship. So dangerous that one of the ladies was found dead behind the house.
Thomas was also in a precarious situation where he was hiding a valuable and precious golden chalice until after the war to prevent the Nazis from stealing it.

Was the killer a violent husband seeking revenge? A secret lover? Or is something more dangerous at play?

Overall I found this read highly entertaining with lots of guessing on whodunnit with complex characters full of intrigue, danger, murder and betrayal - a real high drama for historical fiction thriller fans! Well done Terry Lynn Thomas! Everyone get this it’s such an amazing read!

RACHEL LEVY LESSER

PUB: SHE WRITES PRESS

Rachel Levy Lesser can relive almost every significant life event through an accessory. A scarf, a pair of earrings, a bag, even a fleece pair of socks—each contains the elements that put together the story of a life. About far more than just a hair tie, a bracelet, or a belt, Life’s Accessories is a window into the many ways in which Lesser has come to understand life—in all of its beauty, its joys, its sorrows, its heartaches, its challenges, and its absurdity.

REVIEW/THOUGHTS:

Life’s Accessories by Rachel Levy Lesser is a wonderful memoir and a collection of anecdotes and essays that documents her journey from adolescence to adulthood.

The stories ponder on the lessons learned in poignant periods of her life, while creatively using accessories from a ring, scarf a belt or a handbag to weave those memories she shares.

I found the voice in her writing to be bold, kind, humble, witty and funny! It was relatable and truly heartwarming, sometimes sad but always honest and definitely stylish!

I enjoyed this quick read very much.

ALL THE SILENT VOICES - ELENA MIKALSEN (SUZY APPROVED BOOK TOURS)

PUB: THE WILD ROSE PRESS

PUB DATE : 1/6/2020

SYNOPSIS:

Twenty-one years ago, Emma Shephard was sexually assaulted and forced to leave college. She has tried to forget the trauma, building a new life as a loving wife and parent with a successful marketing career. Then her world is rocked when her rapist buys the pharmaceutical company where she works. Now it's an impossible choice between keeping the safe life she's created and pursuing justice. With her marriage at risk and her child in danger, Emma finds herself at the center of ugly secrets and scandals.

REVIEW/THOUGHTS:

Emma Shepherd was raped when she was in college and despite reporting the incident, she ended up being removed from the University. Despite all the trauma and hours of therapy, she was able to rebuild her life. She is in a happy marriage with a loving husband and daughter. Everything seemed to be going smoothly until the Pharmaceutical company where Emma and her husband works for gets bought by a man whose name is far too familiar to Emma and one, she will never ever forget. With her past staring in front of her face, she vows that this time, she will win and get her revenge.

This is a fast-paced suspense with an unexpected twist that I loved and enjoyed. I am glad to read something in the vein of the #metoo movement and giving voice to those who have had to suffer through trauma. Despite this being a fictional story, I am certain that there are many people currently that have been silenced that have suffered and are hurting and whose voices have yet to be heard. I applaud Elena Mikalsen for writing this story for ‘ALL THE SILENT VOICES’.

Arroyo by Chip Jacobs

PUBLISHER: RARE BIRD BOOKS

PUB DATE: 15th OCTOBER 2019

AUTHOR: CHIP JACOBS

SYNOPSIS

Set against two distinct epochs in the history of Pasadena, California, Arroyo tells the parallel stories of a young inventor and his clairvoyant dog in 1913 and 1993. In both lives, they are drawn to the landmark Colorado Street Bridge, or "Suicide Bridge," as the locals call it, which suffered a lethal collapse during construction but still opened to fanfare in the early twentieth century automobile age. When the refurbished structure commemorates its 80th birthday, one of the planet's best known small towns is virtually unrecognizable from its romanticized, and somewhat invented, past.

Wrought with warmth and wit, Jacobs' debut novel digs into Pasadena's most mysterious structure and the city itself. In their exploits around what was then America's highest, longest roadway, Nick Chance and his impish mutt interact with some of the big personalities from the Progressive Age, including Teddy Roosevelt, Upton Sinclair, Charles Fletcher Lummis, and Lilly and Adolphus Busch, whose gardens were once tabbed the "eighth wonder of the world." They cavort and often sow chaos at Cawston Ostrich Farm, the Mount Lowe Railway, the Hotel Green and even the Doo Dah Parade. But it's the secrets and turmoil around the concrete arches over the Arroyo Seco, and what it means for Nick's destiny, that propels this story of fable versus fact.

While unearthing the truth about the Colorado Street Bridge, in all its eye-catching grandeur and unavoidable darkness, the characters of Arroyo paint a vivid picture of how the home of the Rose Bowl got its dramatic start.

REVIEW

I was intrigued by this book and the story surrounding the famous and beautiful Pasadena, California “Colorado Street Bridge” also known by the locals as the “Suicide Bridge” where many lives were lost. As a long-time resident of Southern California and living only a few blocks from the bridge where I pass it by multiple times a day, I knew that this book by Chip Jacobs ARROYO would be a fantastic read. Part Historical Fiction and part Magical Realism this was a very creative story of learning the fascinating history surrounding the Arroyo Seco, and the surrounding San Gabriel Foothills and the Sierra Madre range through this fictional tale. I certainly learned a lot about the famous names that were either residents or have influenced Pasadena in some way such as Teddy Roosevelt, Upton Sinclair, Charles Fletcher Lummis, and Lilly and Adolphus Busch (Busch Gardens and Budweiser) to name a few.

I enjoyed how the story begins and is seen through the eyes of Nick Chance and his very unusual dog who saves his life which he calls Royo, in 1913. In a parallel timeline 80 years later in 1993, the story connects back to the famous bridge in a very interesting way. I thought the writing was very creative with beautiful prose that took me back to the early days when Pasadena was just developing and the residents that built the city to what it is today. I loved that the landmarks I know well now and how it started back in the day and to see some of the places still present to this day was remarkable to me. One of the places mentioned was Vroman’s which is an amazing independent bookstore that I frequent, and to know that it was already a part of Pasadena’s history since the early 1900’s was pretty amazing. I loved that the author also mentioned one of my favorite hang outs “Pie ‘n Burger” and the Colorado Blvd shops, and many famous names that I merely know now as famous streets in Pasadena, which now gives meaning and understanding.

We all know something about Pasadena, whether it’s from the Beach Boys song “Little old lady from Pasadena”, or have seen the famous Rose Parade every New Year, or have watched the football games at the Rose Bowl. I highly recommend this book for a great historical fiction read that is a delight and will capture your interest.
