SYNOPSIS:
A Cornish town is slowly fracturing under the weight of its growing university…
Prominent businessman, Harry Manchester will not stand by and see his beloved hometown turned into a student ghetto — and many residents and students are relying on him.
But Harry’s stance sets him on a collision course with Dawn Goldberg, formidable Vice Chancellor of Poltowan University, who is set on doubling its size and cementing her career legacy.
As Harry’s marriage falls apart, his business comes under threat, and fellow traders accuse him of halting progress, Dawn is battling her own demons, not least the need to live up to her late father’s expectations and erase the memory of his tragic death.
There can only be one victor in this battle for the soul of a close-knit community…

THOUGHTS/REVIEW:

I enjoyed this book by Nicola K Smith about a lovely Cornish village that is going through “changes” in the community triggered by the growing University. Nobody really likes change and this story gives a great snapshot of what happens when people are challenged. It is a great study in human nature and I really enjoyed the premise of this story.

In reading this book, I could not help but smile and personally relate to this story. I live in a very small town in the suburbs of Los Angeles. Our town is famous only for one thing. We have a small college where previous president Barack Obama went to school in his early college years. I saw how this sleepy town turned into one of the fastest growing cities and certainly added to the traffic, some increase in crime, trash in the streets where many celebrity chefs decide to open their restaurants. This has caused some riffs among the older residents and rumbling from the community. I loved to see the changes in the town where more establishments are coming in and making our boulevard a hopping place to go to on a Friday night. I love that the young people in the University brought music festivals, a livelier and younger crowd and busier malls. The businesses are thriving and jobs are plenty.

I really digressed there but the point is, the book is really amazing. I loved that the story is character driven. Harry Manchester as the prominent businessman and Dawn Goldberg the Vice Chancellor of the Poltowan University clash as their ideals are challenged. The writing is superb, realistic and highly entertaining. I was glued to this book and really enjoyed the dialogue, the pacing, and the world Nicola Smith transported me to in that little Cornish community full of amazing characters that were a delight to read about, really was the highlight of this book. Her amazing descriptions and details really captured my imagination with her vivid descriptions and beautiful writing style.

I highly recommend this book and though Nicola Smith is a new author to me, I am now a huge fan of her writing and will definitely look forward to her future works.
