SYNOPSIS:
A mercenary, a gambler, and a warlord are drawn together for a high stakes poker game. The trophy: a woman, Christine. They are men of unquestionable wealth, indomitable power, and overwhelming guilt; each is enchanted by Christine’s alluring beauty and each relentlessly desires to have her for himself.
Stary’s complex plot keeps the reader guessing as she explores some of today’s most controversial issues for women.
THOUGHTS/REVIEW:
I enjoyed this beautifully written book - the prose and imagery that Stary writes is just brilliant! I read this book in one afternoon because the book is literally unputdownable. I enjoyed the poker reference as the overall theme of the story with the book chapters being divided, beginning with the Deal, the Flop, the Turn, the River and finally the Showdown. What a crazy ride this story was with brilliant plot and an ending that really surprised me. I also enjoyed how Stary was able to immerse the the readers and are transported into these characters' most inner thoughts. You really get to know the character well. The dialogue was superb and the pacing of the story was quick and kept my interest and me turning those pages as more characters and plot is introduced.
I do want to caution the readers with trigger warning: Rape and child abuse.
