In this extract the main character, Kiara, is taking part in an exclusive TV interview with Beth Winters. Kiara is part of a famous girl band and has been forced into the interview by her manager Marco.
Beth nodded, tilting her head sympathetically. “Your dad died when you were twenty-one, right?”
Kiara looked down, chilled by the memory of her last visit to the trailer and what she had done. “Yes, just before I turned twenty-one.”
She stayed silent and her gaze met Beth’s. “Besides your dad, did you have any other family?” she asked.
“No. It was just me and him.”
It was a lie, but Kiara couldn’t talk about her cousin Rob. She had first met him when she was a teenager, he had come to the trailer for some unspecified reason, her dad allowing him to stay for a few days on the couch. She thought maybe he had been in some kind of trouble and needed somewhere out of the way to stay, but neither her dad nor Rob wanted to tell her what was really going on.
It had been the first time she had met anyone else who counted as family. Rob had a strange, lurking quality to him, as if he belonged in a shadowy corner like a spider. He had slept most of the time, drank beers, answered her questions in a flat voice with heavy-lidded eyes, his pale skin greasy and sallow with smatterings of acne across his chin. He told her about his apartment in New York and she asked question after question about life in the city.
Only Marco knew how important Rob had eventually been to her, and it was definitely something she didn’t want to discuss with Beth Winters. Fortunately, Marco had agreed with her on this point.
Seeing that the family question was a dead-end, Beth moved on. “I’m curious, how did you go from your music lessons to the pop star you are today? When did that dream start to take shape for you?”
Kiara felt her heart stutter, just ever so slightly. She was getting to the point where she would have to unpack the memories of that night from where she had stuffed them down deep into locked rooms in her mind.
She breathed out slowly, trying to calm her pulse.
